About Jetpack

If you’re hosted by WordPress.com, you already have Jetpack and all of its features built into your site.

Jetpack was developed by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.

It is the ultimate toolkit for WordPress. It gives you everything you need to design, secure, and grow your site in one bundle.

With Jetpack, you can:

  • Fully customize your site with free themes, image tools, and rich content.
  • Increase your traffic through automatic social sharing, related content, and faster load times.
  • Get a safer, stronger site via secure logins and protection from brute force attacks.

All these core features are free. Advanced features like daily backups, spam protection, and SEO tools can be added with one of three simple and affordable plans.

Best of all, Jetpack’s features are provided and hosted by WordPress.com — so there’s never any extra strain on your server when you activate or use a new tool.

System requirements for Jetpack:

  • A web host that meets the WordPress host requirements.
  • The latest version of WordPress.
  • A WordPress.com account.
  • A publicly accessible WordPress site.
  • XML-RPC is publicly accessible.

You can also use Jetpack on a local or closed WordPress installation by enabling Jetpack’s development mode.

Installation Steps

The easiest way to install Jetpack is from within WordPress itself. Log in to your site and head to your dashboard, click on the Plugins tab in the left panel, then click “Add New.” If you search for “Jetpack,” you’ll find the latest version and be able to install it by clicking the “Install Now” link.

(Don’t see a Plugins menu in your dashboard? Then your site is probably on WordPress.com and you don’t need Jetpack — its features are already bundled into your site!)

If you have installed WP-CLI, you can also get Jetpack by running this command:

wp plugin install jetpack

If you are using a Multisite install, note that Jetpack must be connected individually for each site in the network. Any admin for that site can forge the connection. It does not have to be a different local user or a different WordPress.com user for each site.

After successfully connecting to your WordPress.com account, most Jetpack features are automatically activated. Head over to Jetpack > Settings in your site’s Dashboard to enable and configure more features, and hit the little ‘i’ button to the right of each one to learn more.
